The First Apples…

Some readers will know that we planted a new cider orchard some four years ago with funds from the county council and individual sponsors. For the past three years we have not allowed the trees to fruit so that all the energy went into establishing strong growth. This year, however, our Head Gardener, Ben James, has let things develop naturally and the Tom Putt trees have produced some fine fruit. Tom Putt is both a cider and a cooking apple and so the fruit is on its way to the kitchen. At the time of writing I have no idea what Head Chef, Cameron Farquharson, is going to do with them. The other trees have not fruited strongly but signs are good for next year and maybe our first bottles of cider for all of the original sponsors.
