SUMMARY:Batik into Book-making
DESCRIPTION:\nA one-day course creating your own batik-fronted book at Zinc Arts on the London/Essex border. Course fees include tuition\, use of workroom and on site facilities such as free wifi. A two course lunch is served in the middle of the day\, and refreshments (with biscuits and/or home made cakes) are available\, mid morning and late afternoon. \nOn this relaxing one day course\, you will discover how to design and create a beautiful hard-backed book with your own piece of batik on the cover. You will begin by learning the art of Indonesian batik – hot wax resist painting on cloth – to create a piece of original textile which can be used as the focal point for your book cover. There will be plenty of time for you to experiment with the technique and the varied effects which can be achieved with fabric paints. The wax is then removed\, and the resulting piece of batik can be embroidered or beaded before being mounted.\nWe explore the idea of books and their possible uses\, and you are then invited to create a personal book for your own individual purpose – each person’s will be different in shape\, style\, colour and page design. You will be shown how to bind the book in the ‘formal’ way\, with stitched-in pages and fly leaves\, and add any embellishments – beads\, ribbons\, pockets\, flaps and holders – before finally giving your batik pride of place! There is a £3 materials fee\, and a small requirements list will be sent to students on enrolment. \nThis course is ideal for beginners as well as anyone who loves creating special things. Graduate Jane Bower is a fully qualified and widely experienced teacher of art\, drama\, dance and creative writing. She teaches adults and children throughout the UK and abroad\, and is an associate lecturer at Cambridge University’s Faculty of Education. A published author and professional actress\, Jane is a member and elder of the Emmanuel United Reformed Church\, Cambridge. \n \n\n \n
