SUMMARY:Haydn and the Classical Symphony
DESCRIPTION:\nHaydn is the composer who more than any other epitomises the aims and achievements of\nthe Classical era. We will explore the range and nature of his compositions by reference to a\nnumber of symphonies from across the whole span of his career.. The music examples will be\nprovided on excellent hi-fi equipment. \nNorthcourt is a glorious Jacobean manor surrounded by fifteen acres of beautiful gardens\,\nrising from the stream and walled kitchen gardens to the terraced walks\, recognised\nnationally for their historic importance by English Heritage.\nWe will meet on Tuesday at 5pm and depart on Thursday afternoon. Arts in Residence and\nNorthcourt offer an excellent cuisine including wine with dinner. \nTerry Barfoot is Director of Arts in Residence and writes widely on music for Britain’s\nleading journals\, orchestras\, festivals and record companies. He lectures at venues throughout\nthe country and is Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.\nGwyn Parry-Jones studied with David Wynne and Alun Hoddinott\, and graduated from\nManchester University and the Royal Northern College of Music. He played for some years\nwith the Halle and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras\, and for many years lectured at Reading\nUniversity\, leaving recently to concentrate on his musical interests\, principally conducting\,\nperforming and lecturing. \n\n \n
