DESCRIPTION:\nJanáček is one of the great composers of the 20th century\, but he was already aged 46 when\nthat century began. The most distinctively Czech of the Czech nationalist composers\, he owes\nless than Smetana and Dvořák to Western European models\, and was a provincial musician\nfor most of his life. The 1918 Vienna production of his opera Jenůfa brought him\ninternational fame at the age of 64; yet his finest works were still to come: the operas\,\norchestral and chamber music composed during the final decade of his life. This astonishing\nIndian Summer of creative activity was inspired by his love for a young married woman\,\nKamila Stösslova. Our weekend will explore aspects of this rich legacy\, while discussing\nmany of his greatest works\, with illustrations on excellent hi-fi equipment including DVD\nwith large screen. \nThe Grange at Oborne is a beautiful three-star country house hotel\, set within the rolling\nhills of West Dorset\, just one mile from the charming town of Sherborne. Formerly a manor\nhouse\, the building has undergone a transformation to a luxury country house hotel with\neighteen bedrooms and a delightful restaurant overlooking the floodlit gardens.\nWe will meet on Friday at 5pm and depart on Sunday afternoon. Arts in Residence and The\nGrange offer an excellent cuisine including dinners with wine and a traditional Sunday lunch. \n\n \n
