Stravinsky’s score for his ballet The Rite of Spring is one of the key works of music history. Both the ballet and the music caused a sensation at the first performance, on 29th May 1913. In due course the composer came to prefer the music in the concert hall, and it has become a cornerstone of the orchestral repertory. Our weekend will explore all these aspects of this extraordinary masterpiece. We will consider the music
itself and its background; we will place it in the context of its time; we will see the ballet performed on film. The weekend will conclude with a live performance of Stravinsky’s piano duet version, by Philip Moore and Simon Crawford-Phillips, Britain’s leading piano duo, for which tickets are included.
