SUMMARY:The shock of the new: Stravinsky and The Rite of Spring
DESCRIPTION:\nStravinsky’s score for his ballet The Rite of Spring is one of the key works of music history. Both the ballet and the music caused a sensation at the first performance\, on 29th May 1913. In due course the composer came to prefer the music in the concert hall\, and it has become a cornerstone of the orchestral repertory. Our weekend will explore all these aspects of this extraordinary masterpiece. We will consider the music\nitself and its background; we will place it in the context of its time; we will see the ballet performed on film. The weekend will conclude with a live performance of Stravinsky’s piano duet version\, by Philip Moore and Simon Crawford-Phillips\, Britain’s leading piano duo\, for which tickets are included. \n\n \n
