Blackwork is a form of counted thread embroidery. It is worked on evenly woven fabric, using very simple straight and diagonal stitches to develop many spectacular patterns, often with a geometric theme. Despite the name, it is sometimes sewn in blue, green or red and highlighted in gold.
This traditional hand embroidery is both attractive to look at and relaxing to sew. On this course you will be introduced to many beautiful stitches and patterns and you will discover just how easy it is to create a wonderful piece of tonal work using simple stitches.
Both novices and sewing addicts are very welcome as the course is ideal for all levels of ability.
We will begin with a short introduction to this technique and an explanation of the equipment and materials used. Then, through demonstrations and project work, you will be shown how to plan a piece of work and transfer the design on to fabric. Then using straightforward stitches and one colour of thread, you will produce your own tonal piece of embroidery.
