An introduction to the world of Samba Percussion with composer and bandleader Sara Dhillon

This fun course introduces you to the different rhythms and percussion instruments of Samba in practical, hands-on playing sessions. You don’t need experience of percussion playing, just a good sense of rhythm. All instruments are provided. Learn techniques on the main instruments of the bateria used in Afro-Brazilian music for Carnival and also how to play with the right “feel”. Develop percussion arrangements including breaks, signals and more.

Come experience the thrill of playing in a full Samba band and percussion ensemble. No experience of playing percussion is necessary. This course is suited for anyone who would like to develop their rhythmic skills and sense of time/groove and would like to learn more about this extraordinary and joyous music.

As part of the course, you will be playing percussion, listening to musical examples, clapping different rhythms associated with Samba, and playing different grooves in an ensemble. We will also learn some songs to augment the percussion arrangements.
