Religion is fundamental to defining Victorian England. The Anglican Church was characterised as ‘the Tory Party at prayer’, and religion was ‘the opium of the people’. This course explores geographic patterns of belief and how the established church and nonconformist groups faced the twin challenges of industrialisation and urbanisation.
