Over this weekend you will explore how and why the Russia of 1855 transformed from a monarchical autocracy with hereditary autocratic tsars, to the communist superpower of post the Second World War. In the mid 19th century Russia had a powerful serf-owning nobility and an influential Orthodox Church. Yet in 1917 all of this was swept away during two revolutions, and a new kind of dictatorship emerged based on Marxist dogma and the cult of personality. How can this extraordinary change be explained?
