Some amazing plays were performed in Athens in the 5th century BC. This course traces the origins and development of Greek drama and provides an opportunity to participate in two play readings: Euripides ‘Bacchae’ in which King Pentheus recklessly rejects the worship of Dionysus and Aristophanes ‘The Frogs’, in which Dionysus, dressed as Heracles, enters the Underworld to bring back a dead dramatist to advise the Athenians in their hour of need. All-comers welcome.
