Your opportunity to learn the art of beautiful writing in a wonderful setting! The course is taken by professional calligrapher Peter Lloyd (and if you have ever visited our Open Day you will know what an inspiring, dedicated and patient teacher he is).
This weekend course is designed for aspiring calligraphers to have fun whilst absorbing themselves in learning ‘roundhand’ and ‘Roman capital’ scripts. The ultimate goal is to understand the foundation strokes of calligraphy, to learn how to use the essential tools and materials to start creating beautiful writing. The importance of how design layout, colour, size and spacing of lettering can convey different moods and messages is also incorporated into the weekend. Each student will experiment with and produce a variety of bookmarks and also design a layout for writing out a short quotation or poem of their choice. For those with watercolour or illustration experience, these skills can also be incorporated into the design but that is not essential.
Both beginners and students with previous experience are very welcome. The course is structured with time for group tuition but the emphasis is on individual teaching to ensure that everyone develops at their own pace and level in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. There will be demonstrations of different techniques to inspire continued learning once the course has ended and Peter will provide email support for students if they wish to receive feedback about their development after the course.
You will need to bring a few basics with you, which we will confirm on booking, but otherwise quality paper can be purchased as necessary during the weekend and nib pens, paints and inks will be available as required. Mounts can be cut and purchased to frame completed work during the course if desired.
