Haydn and the Classical Symphony

Tue 15 Mar 2016 @ 18:00 - Thu 17 Mar 2016 @ 14:00

Haydn is the composer who more than any other epitomises the aims and achievements of
the Classical era. We will explore the range and nature of his compositions by reference to a
number of symphonies from across the whole span of his career.. The music examples will be
provided on excellent hi-fi equipment.

Northcourt is a glorious Jacobean manor surrounded by fifteen acres of beautiful gardens,
rising from the stream and walled kitchen gardens to the terraced walks, recognised
nationally for their historic importance by English Heritage.
We will meet on Tuesday at 5pm and depart on Thursday afternoon. Arts in Residence and
Northcourt offer an excellent cuisine including wine with dinner.

Terry Barfoot is Director of Arts in Residence and writes widely on music for Britain’s
leading journals, orchestras, festivals and record companies. He lectures at venues throughout
the country and is Publications Consultant to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
Gwyn Parry-Jones studied with David Wynne and Alun Hoddinott, and graduated from
Manchester University and the Royal Northern College of Music. He played for some years
with the Halle and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras, and for many years lectured at Reading
University, leaving recently to concentrate on his musical interests, principally conducting,
performing and lecturing.
