Crewel work is a very old, traditional and historically important embroidery technique, which can also be used with great success in modern design. Whether you are a newcomer or improver to embroidery, if you want to expand your skills and learn some of the beautiful hand stitches available, crewel work is the ideal technique with which to begin. It employs a wide variety of stitches which you can also use in other forms of embroidery. These stitches include stem, chain, satin, long and short, and laid work. Shaded effects and graduation of colour and tone are achieved in varying ways. Most crewel work designs are based on a Tree of Life which will contain numerous types of leaves and fruits. Using this basic design will enable you to learn a great variety of stitches over the weekend.

Pat Trott’s main passion in life is embroidery and stitchery of all kinds. She holds City and Guilds Creative Studies – Embroidery – Parts I and II, and has had many pieces of her work selected for exhibitions, both at home and overseas. Pat has many years’ experience of teaching adults including at such prestigious locations as Hampton Court. She has written books on Mountmellick embroidery and three dimensional stitches.
