This type of embroidery has been a favourite way of depicting flowers for hundreds of years and you will use a single or a double thread in carefully graded shades of colours to achieve a realistic effect.
Learn the techniques of shading and stitch direction, plus padding of the petals and leaves to give texture and depth to your work. For fun, you may even add an insect, perhaps a butterfly or a spider complete with its web.
Julie Walsby is an experienced tutor who has been embroidering for over 60 years and works as a textile conservator with a particular interest in 17th century Jacobean crewelwork.
