Two new day courses recently added  to the Alston Hall Course Programme 2013

Learn to Spin

Saturday 2nd November

Have you ever thought you might like to try hand spinning your own yarn?  Or maybe you have tried it and would like to refresh your skills.  This one day course can offer you something in either case!  Working with spindles and with wheels, we will look at the basics of spinning, some fibre preparation, and how to tackle wool, silk and maybe some other fibres.  We will supply all of these, enough spindles for all participants, and we will have a few wheels available for the class to use.  (There will be a small materials charge.)

Canal Art

Tuesday 5th November

Canal Art is a British folk art with origins in the 19th century, developing as a way of decorating the commercial barges which carried goods through the canal system.  You will learn the basic techniques involved in creating roses, daisies, forget-me-nots and leaves with embellishments of borders, swags and flicks to bring your designs to life.  We will practise with acrylic paint on paper or papier-mâché objects and you will be able to use the skills learned to work with enamel paint on metal or wood.
